Brooklyn Fest: Book It!

New York Post, September 10, 2009

“Brooklyn Fest: Book It!” By Sara Stewart.

Most days, you can’t swing a dead cat in Brooklyn without hitting a writer (and there’s probably a forthcoming memoir about that: “The Dead Cat-Swingers Club” could be a big hit). But this Sunday at the Brooklyn Book Festival, there’ll be an unusually high density: 220 authors are slated to attend this year. “Brooklyn is the literary capital of New York,” says Borough President Marty Markowitz, who refers to his bookish borough as The Left Bank. He’s a big reader himself: “Currently,” says the history buff, “I’m reading ‘The Third Reich at War,’ by Richard Evans.” We caught up with several festival panelists to ask them a few questions — via e-mail, as authors often prefer — on the state of writing in New York. Books. Sure, you’ve heard of them, but when’s the last time you actually read one? In our increasingly digital world, books are struggling to retain their cultural relevancy — but for at least one day this year, they’ll be more important than Twitter, Facebook, and Adult Friend Finder combined (well, maybe not Adult Friend Finder, but you get the idea).

This Sunday’s fourth annual Brooklyn Book Festival will honor the second best things printed on paper, as more than 200 literary luminaries will gather at Borough Hall to hawk their wares and discuss their trade. Read more.
